1. Low-Voltage DC vs. Mains AC Safety

In educational electronics (such as the Charles Platt curriculum), all experiments operate under Extra-Low Voltage DC (ELV) — typically 3V to 12V DC powered by standard 9V alkaline batteries or certified isolated power adapters.

Voltages below 24V DC cannot overcome dry skin resistance and pose zero lethal shock risk. However, short circuits across high-current battery packs can cause rapid heating, component smoking, and burns. Always double-check power connections before switching on power.

2. Soldering Bench Safety & Fume Management

• Eye Protection: Always wear ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses when soldering, desoldering, and clipping component leads (cut lead ends can fly several feet).
• Fume Extraction: The smoke produced during soldering comes from vaporized rosin flux. Use an active carbon-filter benchtop fume extractor or work in a well-ventilated room.
• Hygiene: Always wash hands with soap and water after handling solder wire, especially when using traditional 60/40 tin-lead alloys.

3. Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Protection

Modern CMOS integrated circuits (such as 74HC-series chips, microcontrollers, and MOSFETs) are vulnerable to static electricity discharges as low as 100V — well below the threshold of human sensation (~3,000V). Use grounded antistatic mats and wrist straps when working with bare silicon ICs.
